Paralympian climbs on top of BA plane during Extinction Rebellion protest

An Extinction Rebellion protester who climbed atop a British Airways plane amid the group's attempt to 'shut down' London City Airport has been removed.

The climate activist groups claims the man is Irish former Paralympian James Brown, who is partially-sighted and competed as a cyclist.

The airport's spokesman said around 2.30pm the man had been removed after he spent an hour atop the British Airways plane which was reportedly bound for Amsterdam.

It comes amid a day of protests as the climate group attempts to 'shut down' the airport for three days.

Earlier an Aer Lingus flight was disrupted when a protester boarded it and refused to sit down.

The flight was delayed for more than an hour before it continued its journey from London to Dublin.

Extinction Rebellion identified the man atop the plane as Brown, saying it is a flight scheduled for Amsterdam.

British Airways has been contacted for comment.

Brown, a Northern Irish former gold medallist runner and bronze cyclist, has previously been involved with the Extinction Rebellion group.

Brown was among activists for the group arrested at Heathrow last month after a protest which saw some Extinction Rebellion members attempt to fly a drone near the airport.

The Met Police says one person was arrested on a flight on the runway following the incident.

The force said several arrests have been made so far during today's protests.

Activists have climbed onto the airport terminal entrance's roof and blockaded its DLR station.

DAC Laurence Taylor of the Metropolitan Police, said earlier: "Our policing plan is aimed at preventing criminal activity which poses a significant safety and security risk to the airport, and the thousands of passengers using it. We are determined to deal with protestors robustly but proportionately.

“Targeting an airport and inconveniencing travellers in this way is wholly unacceptable and irresponsible. The consequences of committing offences at airports are serious; individuals breaking the law are being, and will continue to be, arrested and prosecuted where appropriate.”

A London City Airport spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a booked passenger that climbed on top of an aircraft at London City Airport has been removed.

"We are working with all partners to investigate, and ensure the safe and secure continuation of service.

“A number of protesters remain outside the front of the airport terminal and we are working hard with the Metropolitan Police to minimise disruption to passengers."

By midday, the airport had processed 55 arrivals and 58 departures, its statement said.
