Paraglider's dramatic footage shows lorry fire on M1 between junctions 21 and 22

This dramatic footage shows the aftermath of a lorry explosion on the M1 near East Midlands Airport.

The GoPro footage was filmed from a powered paraglider who happened to be in the air at that very moment, reports Leicestershire Live.

It shows thick, black smoke which billowed into the sky.

The motorway was closed after the incident on the northbound carriageway on Friday, October 8.

It happened between junction 21 for the M69 and Fosse Park and junction 22 for Markfield and Coalville.

Emergency services were called to the scene.

The fire began shortly after 3pm causing hours of misery for motorists trapped behind the HGV.

The driver was not harmed in the incident but the flames damaged the gantry above the road and that lengthened the closures that were necessary.

For much of the afternoon and evening there were queues about six miles long on both sides of the M1 and further long queues for traffic approaching Leicester on the M69.
