Paraglider dies after crashing into power cables

A paraglider has died after crashing into some overhead power cables in fields.

Residents reported multiple emergency vehicles in the in Eastington area - near Stroud - and paramedics, firefighters and police were all in attendance.

Gloucestershire Live reports Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue dispatched two crews to the scene and South Western Ambulance Service sent multiple resources, including land, air and other specialist paramedic teams.

A spokesperson said crews - one from Stroud and one from South Gloucestershire Fire Service - arrived at the scene at 1.24pm.

Gloucestershire Police said the paraglider, a ‘local man’ in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The polices spokesperson said: “Earlier today, around 1.20pm, emergency services were called to a report of a paraglider hitting power lines in Eastington, Stonehouse.

“The local man, aged in his 40s, was paragliding solo when he hit power lines over a nearby field.

“Sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin has been informed.

“Emergency services remain at the scene.”

A total of 133 homes and businesses in the area were also left without power following the incident, with residents being told it was a high voltage fault.

Power has now been returned to the properties according to Western Power Distribution.
