SHIMONOSEKI, Yamaguchi -- A parade commemorating Edo-period (1603-1867) diplomatic missions from the Korean Peninsula to Japan was held in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on Saturday.

About 160 participants from Japan and South Korea took part in the parade, dressed in the colorful, traditional costumes worn by diplomatic envoys known as Chosen Tsushinshi that were dispatched by the Korean dynasty to Japan.

Although the annual event was under threat of cancellation this year due to deteriorating relations between Tokyo and Seoul, about 100 residents of Busan, South Korea, visited the city to participate in the parade.

While the number of South Korean participants was about the same as in previous years, senior officials of the Busan city government were absent this year.

Started in 2004, the parade has been the main event in the city's annual Bakan Festival.
