Paperchase flogging stationery for 35p as website closes ahead of Tesco takeover

Stationery fans have been rushing to the Paperchase website to snap up cheap postcards, pens and planners ahead of the site's closure. It comes after the company fell into administration last month.

The brand has since been rescued by Tesco, who have bought Paperchase and its intellectual property, however, in an email to customers, they announced that the website would permanently close at midnight tonight (February 17).

In a last-ditch effort to flog remaining stock, Paperchase have launched a site-wide sale where customers can get at least 30 per cent off everything online.

Paperchase have promised customers they will continue to process any outstanding orders until they are fulfilled.

The cheapest item on the website is just 35p - a cute postcard with an illustrated cup of coffee - a number of cards and balloons are all priced under £1.

There’s 50 per cent off 2023 diaries, too, priced from £2.50, with gifts like mugs and candles cut by a third.

Shoppers will be able to buy items on the Paperchase website until midnight, when the site will cease trading.

In an email to customers, Paperchase said: “At midnight tonight, we will cease trading of Paperchase.com. It has been a difficult decision but we are grateful for your incredible support and loyalty over the years. We have shared a long and creative journey together, celebrating our mutual love for all things stationery.

“We want to express our sincerest thanks for allowing us to be a part of your creative expression. It has been an honour to see our products bring joy to your lives and we are so grateful to have been a part of your journey.”

Tesco’s acquisition of the Paperchase brand, however, did not include its physical stores, which has placed 106 Paperchase high street shops and around 820 jobs at risk.

The retailer hasn't confirmed an exact date it will close the physical stores, telling shoppers that new stock is ‘arriving weekly’, and will continue trading ‘for a little while longer’.

There are currently discounts of up to 50 per cent on certain items in store, while Paperchase products will still feature in Tesco stores around the UK.

Jan Marchant, Managing Director of Home and Clothing at Tesco said: “Paperchase is a well-loved brand by so many, and we’re proud to bring it to Tesco stores across the UK. We have been building out plans to bring more brands and inspiration to the ranges we currently offer, and this will help us to take those plans further. We look forward to sharing more with our customers in due course.”

Paperchase collapsed into administration previously in 2021, but the business was largely saved, though was forced to close 37 stores, including Manchester city centre's flagship three-storey shop. The brand returned to the city centre later that year after taking over the former Thornton's unit in the Arndale Centre.
