This Irish play, a growing up is hard to do story, is rough and raw but also rather affecting in its quiet way. Merlin, Jo and Ollie are siblings; waifs and strays with an absent father and a hopeless mother who locks them out of the house for long periods.
The garden is their refuge and also a place of fantasy. But theirs is a world on the cusp of change, as the children move from childhood into the teenage years and from innocence to experience. Persistent bullying and a broken friendship are a catalyst for change.
The structure of the play is clumsy and the writing sometimes fumbles for real eloquence. Yet for all its failings this feels as if it is written straight from the heart. It is performed by its young cast with such a lack of guile that you can't help falling for its simple charm.
