Paper drinking straws sold in Ireland recalled due to high level of chemical in coating

A paper straws product sold in Ireland is being recalled due to having a high level of a chemical compound in its coating.

The drinking straws from Unique with a batch of YY17 are subject to the caution.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland is carrying out the recall after illegal levels of 3-monochlor-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) were detected.

A statement said: "Unique Industries Inc. is recalling the above batch of Unique paper straws due to a level above the legal limit of 3-monochlor-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) in the coating of the straws.

"Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the affected batch."

There are 10 straws in the one package of the Unique product. It has a barcode number of 011179620845.
