Papa John's store 'runs out of pizza' after Sunderland's Wembley triumph

A Sunderland branch of Papa John's ran out of pizza as footy fans celebrated Sunday's Wembley triumph.

Sunderland AFC broke their near 50 year Wembley jink, beating Tranmere Rovers 1-0 to lift the Papa John's Trophy.

It sparked jubilant celebrations across Wearside - and seemingly a mad rush to grab some pizza.

By 7.30pm, Papa John's tweeted that the Newcastle Road store had "sold out" of pizza.

Earlier in the day, the store has posted on Facebook that it had been swamped with orders ahead of the final which the Black Cats won thanks to a second half strike from Lynden Gooch.

By kick-off the store had been so busy, bosses had apologised on Facebook for any late orders. By the evening, there was nothing left.

"BREAKING: Papa Lee's has officially sold out of pizza!," tweeted the official Papa John's trophy account, linking the surge in demand to the "Sunderland AFC effect".

ChronicleLive attempted to contact the store for further comment on Monday morning.

It had been temporarily renamed Papa Lee's ahead of the final, in honour of Sunderland manager Lee Johnson.

Sunday's final marked Sunderland's first Wembley win since the club's famous FA Cup triumph against Leeds United in 1973.
