Paolo Nutini: His rise to fame, girlfriends and music hiatus

He's arguably the best thing to come out of Paisley and after a four-year music hiatus, Paolo Nutini will be returning to stage next year as he announces he will be headlining TRNSMT Festival.

The Candy singer hasn't released new music since 2014 and some fans even joked that he hasn't been seen or heard of for so long that he was "on furlough long before furlough was even a thing".

But where has he been all this time?

We take a look back on Paolo's life so far and what's to come for the Paisley star.

Growing up

Paolo Giovanni Nutini was born on January 9, 1987, to his Italian father Alfredo and Scottish mother Linda.

He is the oldest child of two and attended St Andrews Academy in Paisley.

As a teenager, in between writing songs, Paolo used to work a Saturday shift in the cafe, but always knew he wanted to pursue singing.

His father Alfredo, who has been running the Castelvecchi cafe in Paisley for 40 years, said he would like the family chip shop to stay within the Nutini family when he retires.

At 17, Nutini decided to leave Paisley behind and moved to London.

Musical genius

Just before his 18th birthday, Nutini signed for Atlantic Records and his first single 'These Streets' was released in 2006.

A few months later, he then brought out Jenny Don't Be Hasty which reached number five on the UK Singles Chart.

Following his success, he played at gigs such as Glastonbury, Wireless, V Festival and T in the Park.

In 2009, the singer released his second album Sunny Side Up which was a huge success with his songs Candy, Pencil Full of Lead and Coming Up Easy.

In December 2014, Caustic Love came out and sent fans wild with a new range of songs.

And today, it was revealed he will be returning to the music scene next year, so who knows what the future holds... a fourth album perhaps?

Relationships

When he was 15, Paolo met Teri Brogan at school and they had a 8-year-long relationship.

In 2009, the singer told the Daily record that Teri had banned him from writing songs about their sex life.

He even based some of his songs from his album on their breakup.

He then got together with model and actress Amber Anderson.

The pair met on the set of his video for Diana, where they passionately kissed and writhed in a bathtub.

They became a couple at Glastonbury where Amber is from, but sadly after two years, they went their separate ways.

It's unknown what Paolo's current relationship status is, but we imagine that many are hoping he's still on the market

Missing In Action

Following his court case fiasco, Paolo's appearances became rarer and rarer and he was only spotted singing in pubs in off the cuff performances.

In 2019, he stunned punters in St Vincents bar in the city centre as he surprised them with a performance of Candy and Pencil Full of Lead.

But once he stopped posting on social media, fans began to worry about him.

Many called for a comeback and even fellow Scots singer Lewis Capaldi started a Twitter campaign for his return and said he would like to duet with the Paisley star.

Comeback

Over the TRNSMT weekend, fans began to speculate that Paolo might be returning after the Red Rum Club posted that he had left them a gift of tequila backstage.

Paolo sent the lads a bottle of Curado tequila along with a very nice note wishing them the best as they played the festival at the weekend.

He wrote: "To the bhoys from the one and only Red Rum club Welcome back to Glasgow lads.

"Hope you enjoy this bottle and have a great show today.

"Thanks again for your kindness and the welcome in Liverpool. I had a blast.

"Sorry I can't be there to have a shot with you all.

"I'm sure you'll smash it. Big love and may Bob be with you. Paolo x"

And today, he revealed on his first social media post of the year that next year he would be headlining the stage at Glasgow Green.

He wrote: "Tickets on sale 9am Friday 17th September - @trnsmtfest Link in bio."

And fans went mad for the post.

One wrote: "I can’t believe it! Hopefully new music and a new tour on its way."

While one penned: "This makes my day!! So happy (and relieved) to hear you’re getting back on stage!"
