Paolo Maldini makes Liverpool Champions League final confession

Paolo Maldini has not been able to forget AC Milan's defeat to Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League final.

The Italian side had one hand on the trophy as they took a 3-0 lead into half-time.

However, three goals in six minutes from Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso drew the Reds level before they went on to claim victory in a penalty shoot-out.

Maldini had given his side the lead with the fastest goal ever scored in a Champions League final but that stat has been lost in the memories of Liverpool's incredible comeback.

In an interview with UEFA.com (via MilanNews.it ), Maldini said he has not been able to forget what happened that night in Istanbul.

"It makes me laugh that I played eight European Cup finals and won five of them, but people only seem to remember that one. It left an important mark," he said.

"My goal in the 2005 final? It was the fastest scored in a Champions League final, the most dramatic to prove that things cannot be taken for granted and it’s that unpredictability which makes the sport marvellous.

"We were the favourites, we played much better than Liverpool and the momentum of the game never really shifted apart from those six minutes.

"We were consistently threatening going forward. But when you accept these painful situations, it becomes easier for you to have other chances to make up for them."

Maldini was able to take revenge two years later when Milan and Liverpool met in the Champions League final once more.

The Reds were defeated 2-1 but Maldini said he hardly remembers the game.

"I remember very little of the game. I had taken so many painkillers to get through it. I remember Pippo Inzaghi’s goals, the final whistle and a little of the celebrations.

"When I had surgery three days after the final, every time I woke up, I’d ask if we had won or lost, just to make sure."

It seems the Reds' 2005 triumph is as memorable for Maldini as it is for Liverpool fans.
