Paolo Fonseca is reportedly on the brink of succeeding Steve Bruce as Newcastle boss ending links to Steven Gerrard.
The Rangers boss has been touted as one of the frontrunners for the St James' Park hot seat following the big-money takeover on Tyneside.
Last season's Scottish Premiership title win caught the eye of onlookers south of the border, however the former Roma boss looks set to land the English Premier League job.
The Mirror report that Magpies co-owner Amanda Staveley wants to hand a long-term deal to Fonseca worth £6million-a-year.
Co-owner Jamie Reuben is said to have wanted Frank Lampard to take on the Magpies' job.
It is noted that former Chelsea boss Lampard pulled out of the running for the post due to concerns over a relegation scrap this season.
Additionally, Fonseca impressed during his interview with his short and long-term vision following the Saudi-led takeover.
Bruce’s former assistant Graeme Jones will stay in interim charge for the next two games as all parties iron out the last details.

That means Fonseca's first game in the dugout would be following the next international break against Brentford on November 20.
Following the Europa League win over Brondby, Gerrard shrugged off speculation linking him with a move away from Scotland.
Asked to comment on the Newcastle speculation, he signed off his BT Sport interview by saying: "Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don't ask me silly questions then!"
