Panto dame accused of embezzling £14k from drama group which helped launch careers of Paolo Nutini and James McAvoy

A panto dame is accused of taking money from a kids' drama group which helped launch the careers of James McAvoy and Paolo Nutini.

David McCann, 58, is accused of embezzling more than £14,000 from Pace Theatre Company, in Paisley.

The organisation helped Hollywood leading man McAvoy, 41, singer Nutini, 34, and Bodyguard and Rocketman star Richard Madden, 34, make the big time.

McCann - who performed under the stage name David Wallace - founded the youth group three decades ago, appearing in its festive plays in drag for more than 25 years.

He denies embezzling £14,060 from the group’s base in School Wynd, Paisley, between December 2013 and March 2017, and was due to go on trial over the claims last year at Paisley Sheriff Court.

But the case was postponed and on Monday a further pre-trial took place at the Renfrewshire court.

After hearing that McCann's lawyer had just received a report from prosecutors which he needed time to look over, Sheriff Seith Ireland adjourned the case until later in the year.

Pace Theatre Company has around 2,000 members, making it one the biggest drama groups in Britain.

It stages performances around the country and is funded mostly through membership fees.

McCann also worked alongside Paisley-born BBC Fame Academy winner and songwriter David Sneddon, 42, and countless stage and television actors.
