Panthers WR Robbie Anderson backs Matt Rhule, blasts booing fans

Carolina Panthers wideout Robbie Anderson has always been open and straightforward about his feelings, even if they’re sometimes expressed through cryptic tweets. And that, along with his stances on his head coach  and disgruntled fans, haven’t changed.

The seventh-year receiver spoke with reporters following Wednesday’s practice and addressed the rough waters his team is currently navigating through. Not only have the Panthers gotten off to an 0-2 start this season in two heartbreaking finishes, but they’ve also lost nine straight games dating back to 2021—the longest active losing streak in the NFL.

But Anderson isn’t giving up on Matt Rhule. In fact, he’ll be out there playing for him in Week 3.

“I’m playing this game for Coach Rhule, more than anything,” Anderson said. “He’s getting a lot of blame that it’s not him. But we know, as a team, that he’s telling us what we need to do. He can’t coach and play. He’s not out there to make us do the simple things he’s been put in this position to do. So you know what I’m sayin’? I’m playing this game for him.”

The two go way back to their days at Temple University, where they spent three years with one another. The 2022 campaign now marks the sixth season Anderson has played under Rhule.

Anderson was also asked about Panthers fans who may be bringing “negative energy” to Bank of America Stadium given the team’s frustrating struggles. And just as he did last season, he denounced their fandom entirely.

We’ll see how much longer the fans will have this team’s back, especially if their painful woes continue.
