Panthers will exercise Sam Darnold’s 5th-year option

Much of the discourse regarding Sam Darnold’s trade market revolved around his unattractive fifth-year option.

However, after acquiring Darnold in a package for three draft picks Monday, the Panthers plan on picking that option up, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. The Panthers have until May to make that official. Doing so would cost Carolina around $18.8 million, fully guaranteed.

Darnold’s fifth-year option likely played a part in New York’s decision to move him to Carolina. Now the Jets can reset the clock on the quarterback contract with whoever they select at No. 2, something Douglas hinted at in a statement regarding the trade.

“I want to publicly acknowledge the commitment, dedication, and professionalism Sam displayed while with the Jets. He is a tough-minded, talented football player whose NFL story has not been written yet,” Douglas said. “While all these things are true, this move is in the short- and long-term best interests for both this team and him. We thank Sam for all of his work on behalf of this organization and wish him well as he continues his career.”
