Panthers will ‘continue discussing options’ for open roster spot

The Panthers still have an open roster spot following the release of backup offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch a couple weeks ago.

There’s been no shortage of speculation about who they might want to fill that 53rd spot. So far, there’s been no action, though. The team was reported to be in the market for a wide receiver ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline. They have since seen Mohamed Sanu get dealt to the Patriots, Emmanuel Sanders go the 49ers and Josh Gordon go to the Seahawks without even putting in a claim for him.

Coach Ron Rivera was asked about the vacancy in his Monday presser and said the team will continue discussing their options.

Last week, Rivera offered a different answer when he was asked about the open spot. He said general manager Marty Hurney has a plan.

So, what is it?

Upgrading the wide receiver corps may seem like less of a need after D.J. Moore’s breakout game against the Titans, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t use another weapon on offense. Outside of Christian McCaffrey’s sensational production, the Panthers haven’t been consistent at all on that side of the ball. Adding another play-maker is exactly the kind of move that championship contenders (see: New England, San Francisco, Seattle) make at this point in the season.

Adding more depth to the offensive line would also make a whole lot of sense. Dennis Daley is looking great at left tackle but Greg Little remains in the concussion protocol and the unit’s pass protection is still suspect overall.

Replacing Kawann Short is practically impossible. However, if the Panthers could find a piece to improve their run defense, it could make a significant difference down the stretch.

Whatever the plan is, they might want to hurry the timeline up. Winning at Green Bay is a tall order and they’ll need all the help they can get.

Update:

The Panthers claimed wide receiver Donte Moncrief off waivers from the Steelers. Exciting.
