Panthers Week 5 injury report: Things go from bad to worse

The Panthers are on a two-game winning streak, but every week the injury report is getting longer and it’s filled with important names. Safety Eric Reid has joined the growing list of DNP’s, as has rookie Greg Little, who provided a much-needed spark at left tackle on Sunday.

Here’s your first look at the Week 5 injury report.

Player Injury Wed Thu Fri Status
QB Cam Newton Foot DNP DNP
OT Greg Little Concussion DNP DNP
S Eric Reid Ankle DNP DNP
OLB Brian Burns Wrist DNP DNP
G Trai Turner Ankle DNP DNP
CB Donte Jackson Groin DNP DNP
TE Chris Manhertz Concussion DNP DNP
RB Christian McCaffrey Rest DNP Full
WR Curtis Samuel Rest DNP Full
LB Bruce Irvin Hamstring Limited Full
OLB Marquis Haynes Elbow Full Full
DT Gerald McCoy Knee Full DNP
LB Shaq Thompson Hand Full Full

Burns apparently injured himself slamming his fist after only getting a partially blocked punt against Houston, which you both love and hate to see.

Aside from that, this is pretty much a total disaster. You don’t expect to see an IR report this long until much later in the season. It would be one thing if it was all second and third stringers, but these are critical pieces who are either out or not 100 percent.

We’ll update this post throughout the rest of the week.

Update:

Wide receiver Chris Hogan has been placed on injured reserve. Unlike Kawann Short, he could return later this season.

Update:

On Thursday, several players were upgraded to full participants. However, eight were still out at practice, including Burns and Reid. McCoy was downgraded. Coach Ron Rivera told the media that McCoy missing Thursdays will be the new normal.
