Panthers Week 4 injury report: Bruce Irvin back, Gerald McCoy out

The Panthers may have dominated on Sunday against the Cardinals, 38-20. The sad reality is Carolina remains in a difficult spot at 1-2 and is suffering from a rash of significant injuries. Cam Newton and Bruce Irvin are still not practicing and now Pro Bowl guard Trai Turner has turned up on the injury report as well with an ankle issue.

Here’s how this week’s injury report is shaping up.

Player Injury Wed Thu Fri Status
QB Cam Newton Foot DNP DNP Out
LB Bruce Irvin Hamstring DNP Limited
DT Kawann Short Shoulder DNP DNP
G Trai Turner Ankle DNP DNP
DE Marquis Haynes Elbow DNP Limited
CB Donte Jackson Groin Limited DNP
TE Greg Olsen Back Limited Limited
LB Shaq Thompson Knee Limited Full
DB Rashaan Gaulden Groin Full Full
DT Gerald McCoy Knee DNP

Turner hurt his ankle in Arizona and had to leave the game early. If he can’t go against the Texans, speculation is Daryl Williams will replace him at right guard, allowing Greg Little to start at left tackle.

Newton has already been ruled out and recent reporting suggests it’s going to be a while before we see him again. The Athletic says Newton is dealing with a Lisfranc injury.

Irvin has not played yet this season due to his hip injury. While it’s unfortunate, the flip-side is it’s allowed more playing time for rookies Brian Burns and Christian Miller.

One positive takeaway: Short’s shoulder injury does not sound serious. Coach Ron Rivera told reporters he would have played on Sunday if it was later in the season. Short was also dressed today, so he’ll likely participate soon and play this week.

Update:

Irvin returned to practice on Thursday and told reporters he’s definitely going to play this week. However, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was out with a knee injury.
