The $55-million marriage between Matt Kalil and the Carolina Panthers was a cumbersome one. While it’s finally over, as with any divorce, the effects will be felt for some time.
The release of Kalil—designated as a post-June 1st cut—will translate into a little more wiggle room for general manager Marty Hurney and the front office. The Panthers will gain $7.25 million in additional cap space on June 2, bringing their spending money to approximately $12 million to $13 million. The Panthers will also have the option of rolling over the $7.25 million into the 2020 salary cap.
While that relief won’t officially hit the books until then, the Panthers could theoretically use their newfound financial freedom to sign other free agents beforehand. The safety position, one vacated by the release of another veteran starter in Mike Adams, should be of particular interest.
Despite the welcome cap savings, Kalil will account for a total of $4.9 million in dead money for 2019 and $9.8 million in 2020.
Kalil’s departure comes just hours after the announcement of fellow offensive tackle Daryl Williams’ new one-year deal.
