Panthers snag another ex-Jets QB

One ex-Jets quarterback wasn’t enough for the Panthers. No, they needed more.

Carolina signed James Morgan to its practice squad on Wednesday, per PFF’s Doug Kyed. Morgan was cut by the Jets on Tuesday.

The practice squad signing comes months after the Panthers acquired Sam Darnold in a trade with New York. Darnold is penciled in as Carolina’s new starter.

Morgan and Darnold were teammates last season in New York.

Morgan has not attempted an NFL pass since being drafted in the fourth round in 2020. He is, however, coming off a thrilling preseason finale that saw the FIU product complete a last-second Hail Mary that set the Jets up for a tie with the Eagles.

While Robert Saleh was impressed with Morgan’s performance, the Jets are rolling with Mike White as Zach Wilson’s backup. New York was also able to retain veteran Josh Johnson on its practice squad.

The Jets will visit the Panthers in Week 1 of the regular season, so adding Morgan could be more a gamesmanship move on Carolina’s part. After spending the offseason and summer learning Gang Green’s new offense, Morgan should have some information worth sharing with his new team.
