Panthers sign QB Jake Luton, release 2 players from practice squad

The Carolina Panthers made a few moves to their practice squad on Tuesday.

Coming in, or coming back in, is quarterback Jake Luton. The 27-year-old passer was released from the group this past Thursday, when the team had to make room for guard Deonte Brown.

Luckily for Luton, there’s now room for him and his third stint on Carolina’s practice squad this season. His first run ended back on Sept. 26—when the division rival New Orleans Saints, this weekend’s opponents, poached him to their active roster.

Luton, a 2020 sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has played three regular-season games in his NFL career—all of which came during his rookie season. He appeared in two of the Panthers’ preseason contests this past summer, where he completed eight of his 19 passing attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Panthers, additionally, cleared a bit more space on the practice squad—releasing wide receiver Matt Landers and outside linebacker Jordan Thomas.
