Panthers release veteran slot cornerback Captain Munnerlyn

The Panthers are fully embracing the youth movement on defense. Legendary defensive end Julius Peppers has retired from the NFL. Long-time linebacker Thomas Davis won’t be coming back. 15-year veteran safety Mike Adams has been told he won’t return, either. Now, slot cornerback Captain Munnerlyn is also on his way out.

The team announced Monday that it’s releasing Munnerlyn from his contract. Munnerlyn was a seventh-round pick by the Panthers in the 2009 NFL draft. He played well five years before moving on to Minnesota, where spent three seasons before returning to Carolina in 2017.

In 154 career games, Munnerlyn has posted a total of 12 interceptions, 64 pass breakups, 10 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles and 415 solo tackles.

This year’s class of free agent cornerbacks is not impressive, especially at nickel. There’s a good chance Munnerlyn will find work with another team soon.
