Panthers release Jake Luton from practice squad

You can scratch Jake Luton’s name off your program yet again.

On Wednesday morning, the Carolina Panthers announced that they have released the 27-year-old quarterback from their practice squad. This now marks Luton’s third departure from the group this season.

His first exit came back on Sept. 26, when the New Orleans Saints signed him off Carolina’s practice squad. He returned a month later, when the Panthers added him and tight end Jordan Matthews on Oct. 25.

Luton was then released on Nov. 30 to make room for guard Deonte Brown. He’d make his second return a week later, after Carolina parted ways with wide receiver Matt Landers and outside linebacker Jordan Thomas.

The 6-foot-6, 224-pound passer was a sixth-round selection of the Jacksonville Jaguars from the 2020 NFL draft. He appeared in two of the Panthers’ three preseason contests this past summer, where he completed eight of his 19 passing attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
