He’s baaaaaack!
On the very first play in his improbable return to the Carolina Panthers, quarterback Cam Newton did a Cam Newton thing. He scored on a powerful short-yardage run like only he can.
With the Panthers positioned on the Cardinals’ 2-yard line just three minutes into the game, head coach Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Joe Brady dialed up No. 1. No. 1 reciprocated, of course, with a touchdown rush to help give Carolina an early 7-0 edge.

Newton’s end zone visit was the 59th from scrimmage in his Panthers career, moving him into second all-time in franchise history. He also now has 71 career rushing touchdowns, adding to his all-time NFL record. The next closest quarterback is Hall of Famer Steve Young (43).
The scoring drive was set up by defensive end Haason Reddick, who didn’t take long to reintroduce himself to Arizona. He forced a strip-sack of quarterback Colt McCoy on the first possession for the Cardinals offense.
But wait, there’s more!
As if that wasn’t enough to digest, Newton would go on to throw for a touchdown in his first pass back. Cam found wideout Robby Anderson for another 2-yard score to push the shocking lead to 14-0 not even seven minutes into the contest.
