Panthers promote QB Tommy Stevens to their active roster vs. Saints

Here’s the Tommy Stevens revenge game we’ve all been waiting for. The former New Orleans Saints draft pick was released earlier this season and quickly picked up by the Carolina Panthers, who have signed him to their active roster before Week 17’s Saints-Panthers matchup.

Still, we shouldn’t expect to see much of Stevens on Sunday. He’s the fourth quarterback on Carolina’s roster behind Teddy Bridgewater, P.J. Walker, and Will Grier, and could very well not dress out for the game. But the Panthers elevated him from their practice squad for a reason, so stay tuned.

Stevens was a surprise last-minute selection by the Saints back in April, with Sean Payton having traded back into the seventh round to snag Stevens and keep him from landing with Carolina (and his former protégé Joe Brady, who coached Stevens in college).

But the Saints envisioned Stevens as a tight end in the NFL, and he struggled in the transition. He’s since returned to playing quarterback with the Panthers, which is where he’s wanted to be all along. He said as much before the draft to LSU Wire’s Crissy Froyd. Maybe he’ll get an opportunity to show his coaches what he can do against the team that drafted him.
