The Panthers may have just found their new backup for Christian McCaffrey. Using the No. 154 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, Carolina chose Florida running back Jordan Scarlett.
Scarlett checks in at 5-foot-10, 210 pounds. He posted a total of 1,846 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 344 college carries.
Coach Ron Rivera told reporters that the team was looking for a back that can replicate McCaffrey’s skill set, which makes this pick a little bit off. Scarlett has almost no experience catching the ball. He had just 15 catches in college for 108 yards and no touchdowns. Drops were also an issue for him at Florida.
If nothing else, what the Panthers are getting here is a short yardage specialist who can help them grind out plays at the goal line or move the chains with inches to go.
