Panthers open 5.5-point underdogs vs. 49ers for Week 8 matchup

The bye week is over for the Panthers and it’s time to get back to business. That means preparing to visit the toughest team in the conference. The 49ers just shut out the Redskins 9-0 on Sunday, bringing their record for the season to 6-0, good for first place in the NFC.

Looking ahead, the oddsmakers like the Niners for this week’s matchup. According to BetMGM, Carolina has opened as a 5.5-point underdog.

San Francisco’s success is being powered by its defense. The 49ers have only allowed 10.7 points per game this season. Only the Patriots have given up fewer.

On the bright side, the Panthers have an extra week of rest and the Niners have a glaring weakness at quarterback. Jimmy Garoppolo has only thrown seven touchdown passes to go with six interceptions.

History may also be in their favor. Carolina has gone 13-8 all-time against San Francisco, winning six of the last seven.
