Panthers OC Joe Brady explains his offensive philosophy

The Carolina Panthers have announced Joe Brady is their new offensive coordinator, making the news official. Brady comes to Carolina from LSU, where he just helped engineer one of the greatest quarterback seasons in the history of college football. He also has experience in the NFL, having worked for two years under Saints coach Sean Payton.

What will Brady be bringing with him beyond pure Xs and Os brilliance? It sounds like he has a grounded and smart offensive philosophy. Here’s how Brady explained it to the official team website.

“The most important thing that we do from a system standpoint is we find out what our players do well so we can put them in position to have success. . . Now, it’s critical that we find a vision for each and every player. The offense that we’re looking to have is one that applies pressure. . . We can do that in multiple ways, whether that’s formations, whether that’s personnel groupings or tempo. It’s our job to exploit mismatches and move guys around to get them the matchups that we want. Applying pressure, getting your speed in space, making defenses defend every blade of grass and just let your players do what they do best.”

This should come as music to the ears of Carolina fans who had grown tired with the team’s previous philosophy, which seemed to consist largely of nonsense like “establishing the run,” “imposing our will,” or “playing with physicality.”

Brady has a different system than what the Panthers have been using. However, the best coaches always tailor their scheme to the talents that they have rather than forcing it the other way around.
