Panthers name Christian McCaffrey a team captain for first time

Christian McCaffrey may or may not be the top running back playing in the NFL today – we’d argue that he is – but there are a lot of other strong candidates for that title. What’s not debatable is that he’s already established himself as the greatest back in Carolina Panthers franchise history.

McCaffrey’s legacy with the team that drafted him will be taking another step forward. According to a report by Jourdan Rodrigue at the Athletic, the Panthers have named McCaffrey a team captain for today’s game against the Jaguars. It’s the first time he’s gotten the honor in his career.

The Panthers named five permanent captains at the outset of the season: Cam Newton, Greg Olsen, Luke Kuechly, Colin Jones and Kawann Short. The sixth captain has rotated every week. Injuries have forced coach Ron Rivera’s hand even more, so hence McCaffrey will get the opportunity.

Heading into Sunday’s games, CMC tops the league in rushing yards, yards from scrimmage and leads all RBs in fantasy points scored.
