Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, 28, announces he's retiring from the NFL

CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly is retiring from the NFL.

He announced the news Tuesday in a video posted to the Panthers' twitter feed. Kuechly did not state a specific reason for his retirement, but said that he wasn't able to play the game to the level he wanted to.

Kuechly is 28 years old and has played in the NFL for eight seasons. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and was named First-Team All-Pro five times in his career. In every season of his career he totaled over 100 tackles.

He was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012 and the Defensive Player of the Year in 2013.

The linebacker has a history of concussions, with at least three reported cases beginning in 2015. Kuechly was consistently regarded as one of the best linebackers in the NFL, known for his study of the game.
