Panthers injury updates: Cam Newton ruled out vs. Cardinals

As expected, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been ruled out for this week’s game after aggravating his foot sprain. In his place, Kyle Allen will start on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Several other veteran quarterbacks are also out this week. The New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees had surgery on a torn ligament in his throwing hand, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger is out for the year with an injury to his throwing elbow, and Eli Manning (New York Giants) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (Miami Dolphins) have both been benched.

That makes Allen part of a major youth movement at the position this week, as Gil Brandt pointed out on Twitter.

This list is a stark reminder of Cam’s shelf life. Even if he gets back to 100 percent, there are several names here that are likely to be playing long after he retires.

The Panthers also ruled out Bruce Irvin, Rashaan Gaulden and Brandon Greene for the game against the Cardinals, per The Athletic.
