Panthers injury updates: Cam Newton, Greg Little not practicing

The Panthers are back at practice today after taking Friday off to rest following the disaster in New England.

As expected, starting quarterback Cam Newton is not participating. He is recovering from a mid-foot sprain and is expected to miss a couple of weeks. General manager Marty Hurney says the team is cautiously optimistic he will play Week 1.

Here are a few other players who are sitting out.

OL Greg Little

Little’s injury is the most concerning. He left Thursday night’s game to be evaluated for a concussion. While he told coach Ron Rivera he felt fine afterwards, there has been no official word on his status as of yet.

The Panthers offensive line needs all the help it can get right now, so don’t be surprised if they bring somebody in.

CB Kevon Seymour

Seymour has been out for a while and he’s still not practicing.

Seymour has the benefit of experience, but if he can’t get back on the field soon he may lose his spot on the roster to a younger cornerback.

DT Vernon Butler

Butler did not play against the Patriots and is also not practicing.

Butler’s spot on the roster is probably safe thanks to his relatively low cap hit. He was spotted working off to the side along with wide receiver Chris Hogan, though.

On the bright side, defensive back Rashaan Gaulden and safety Colin Jones are both practicing again.

If Rivera gives any meaningful info after practice, we will post an update here.
