Panthers hire former linebacker Luke Kuechly as pro scout

Luke Kuechly was one of the smartest linebackers to ever play the sport. He will now be putting that extensive football knowledge to work for the Panthers in a different way. The team has officially hired Kuechly to join their front office as a pro scout.

Here’s what Kuechly had to say about his new gig, per the team website.

“I’ve never really done anything like this, so I’m just going to take it a day at a time and see what I think. . . I think it’ll be fun. . . I explored some other things, and they were all really cool opportunities. But I like being around the team, I like being around Charlotte, I like the guys upstairs (in the front office), and this will give me, I think, the closest thing I can get to playing.”

Kuechly was also considering a jump into broadcasting but ultimately decided to stay as close to the game as he could.

Carolina’s young defense in particular needs as much help as it can get. On paper, it looks like the worst defensive unit in the NFC, so anything Kuechly can offer during what promises to be a rocky transitional season will be welcome.
