Panthers Highlights: Corn Elder picks off Will Grier with one hand at OTAs

The Panthers have gone all out to upgrade their defensive line this offseason. Questions remain in the defensive backfield, though. Mike Adams has moved on, and the team has yet to add another safety to replace him and pair with Eric Reid.

As far as in-house options go, Rashaan Gaulden is the most likely candidate to start at free safety come Week 1 against the Rams. Gaulden is also preparing to put in time at the slot cornerback spot vacated by Captain Munnerlyn’s exit. It’s not clear which position Gaulden will play when the season starts, but he can’t do both at the same time.

That means between now and September, Carolina either has to find or produce another nickel/safety option. Signing a proven veteran free agent is probably the way to go. On the roster, Corn Elder is the logical favorite.

Elder helped his case with this highlight-reel worthy play. Watch Elder pick off third-round pick Will Grier with one hand at OTAs.

Based on the camera angle, it’s impossible to tell exactly what Grier saw there. In any case, it was a great play on the ball by Elder.

Update:

The team has signed former Buccaneers cornerback Javien Elliott, who should be first in line for Munnerlyn’s old spot. Elder will likely back him up.
