Panthers have allowed the 8th-lowest passer rating on first down

If you’re into football analytics, by now you know how critical passing on first down is and that every NFL team’s offensive coordinator should be doing more of it. Of course, that also means it’s just as important to stop your opponents from doing it well.

By that measure, the Panthers defense is doing a bang-up job so far. According to NFL matchup on ESPN, Carolina has allowed the eighth-lowest passer rating (77.0) on first down in the league through three games.

Pass defense is a two-way street and for the most part it’s working both ways for the Panthers.

First, their pass rush is much improved from last season. After three weeks, they’re tied with the Packers for the second most sacks (12) in the league. Only Jacksonville and New England have more.

Second, the pass coverage is also much better – especially thanks to the efforts of cornerback James Bradberry. He’s allowed the lowest passer rating in the NFL this year and is well on his way to earning a huge extension befitting a Pro Bowl cornerback during the offseason.

Then again, it’s worth mentioning that Carolina hasn’t faced a real threat at quarterback just yet. If the Panthers are still in the top 10 after facing Deshaun Watson, then you can feel free to get excited.
