Panthers front office announces plans for football analytics department

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney has made some significant management structural changes to the front office and also announced plans for a football analytics department. The team dropped that bombshell in the middle of a release about three new executive directors that will report to Hurney directly.

Hurney says Rob Rogers will serve as executive director of player finance and football research. Here’s how he described the job, per the team website.

“Rob will continue to handle player finance and contracts, and manage the salary cap, while overseeing a football analytics department that we are in the process of implementing. . .”

Interesting stuff.

Hurney’s making the news, but owner David Tepper’s influence is all over this one. NFL teams are notoriously secretive about this kind of thing, so we will probably never remotely learn what they do in this department. Nevertheless, it’s probably a good indication that the Panthers are (finally) beginning to change with the times behind the scenes.

According to the release, the other two positions will be filled by Jeff Morrow – executive director of player personnel, and Mark Carrier – executive director of football staff.
