Panthers first-round pick Brian Burns is ‘thankful’ for help from veterans

Culture is sometimes overrated by certain people in pro football. There are some who seem to think it’s even more important than strategy, for example. While that kind of thinking probably isn’t going to help the Jets become relevant again anytime soon, that doesn’t mean team culture doesn’t matter.

For example, the Panthers’ top two defensive free agent pickups this year have both cited the team’s culture as factoring in their signings. After coming on board in March, Bruce Irvin talked up Ron Rivera’s honesty and authenticity. Likewise, Gerald McCoy mentioned the chemistry he saw first-hand when several Carolina players took him out for lunch during his visit.

First-round pick Brian Burns also seems to be grateful for the supportive environment. He says he feels blessed that the veterans on the roster have been helping him out, per the team website.

“It’s been great. This locker room is filled with good dudes. I heard at other places it’s not like this, so I’m just blessed to be here. Everybody has been helping me out constantly. I’m thankful.”

Burns is another speed rusher in the same mold as Mario Addison. In addition to learning some new tricks from older players, he will have to bulk up in order to impact at this level.

Our early projections for Burns’ rookie season have him posting 57 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
