The Carolina Panthers came into the 2021 season having retained one of the hottest head coaching candidates in the whole sport. Well, things got pretty cold in just a few months’ time.
On Sunday, the team announced it has parted ways with offensive coordinator Joe Brady. In a statement released by the organization, head coach Matt Rhule said he has made the choice to go in a different direction amidst Carolina’s season-long struggles.
“I met with Joe this morning and informed him that I have decided to make a change,” Rhule said. “I’m very grateful to him for his time and effort in helping us get established over this past year and a half.”
Brady was hired out of Louisiana State University in January of 2020—with the then 30-year-old play-caller coming off one of the most prolific offensive campaigns in college football history. That success, however, has not translated in his jump back to the pros.
The Panthers ranked 21st in yards per game and 24th in points per game under Brady in his first season on the headset. Through 12 games in 2021, they currently sit 28th in yards (308.7) and 23rd in points (19.7).
Senior offensive assistant Jeff Nixon will assume Brady’s duties for the remaining five games.
