Panthers DT Kyle Love gives up his jersey number to Gerald McCoy

While the Buccaners gave away Gerald McCoy’s old number to Ndamukong Suh like they were handing out expired Halloween candy, the Panthers are doing things differently. McCoy has been wearing No. 93 for his entire career ever since Tampa picked him in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft. That tradition will continue for him in Carolina, as it turns out.

The team’s superb Twitter account just released a photo of McCoy in his new Panthers jersey, and he’s wearing No. 93, which was previously held by veteran defensive tackle Kyle Love.

Love probably got a little pay day from McCoy in exchange for the number, but nothing has been reported.

According to Bill Voth, Love will go back to wearing No. 77.

McCoy can earn up to $10.25 million for the Panthers this year if he hits all his bonuses. Meanwhile, Love will only make $1.35 million as a backup. Along with Kawann Short and Dontari Poe, they comprise the deepest and most expensive interior defensive line rotation in football.
