No one, the Carolina Panthers included, want to be running a two-quarterback system in professional football.
Even head coach Matt Rhule, who is currently running a two-quarterback system in professional football, said on Wednesday that he doesn’t want to be running a two-quarterback system in professional football. Alas, we are here.
One of those quarterbacks, however, doesn’t want this less-than-optimal situation to steer him off of the bigger picture. Cam Newton told reporters on Thursday that he just has to work with the assignment that he’s given.
“You just gotta be a professional,” Newton simply said. “Don’t allow it to be a distraction. It doesn’t matter what it is.”
In the Week 14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, Newton was subbed in and out with backup P.J. Walker—who took over at the ends of both halves for the two-minute offense. Newton finished the day having completed 15 of his 23 attempts for 178 yards along with a pair of turnovers.
This Sunday in Buffalo may not be much different in terms of the approach under center, as Rhule assured the media they’ll move forward giving both guys work. Regardless, Newton trusts the coaching staff to put him in the best situations to succeed.
“I do what I’m told,” he added. “I know that sounds kind of . . . it’s true. I’m a player and I gain guidance in what the coaches’ plan is. I trust in the coaches’ plan. Whether it’s coming from up top with Matt or even with coach [Jeff] Nixon. Those guys come up with the plan. It’s in our best interest as a team to follow it as players and execute to the best of our ability.”
In a followup question, Newton was asked if this type of unconventional role was presented to him prior to his signing. To that, he only said “I’m focused on Buffalo.”
As an added treat, which is actually quite needed given the gloominess surrounding the team’s current struggles, Newton went on to dish out some nicknames for his newer teammates. They are as follows:
- P.J. Walker: “Skateboard P”
- Matt Barkley: “Montgomery”
- Sam Darnold: “Sam-u-el”
