Panthers bring back DE Wes Horton to take Cam Newton’s roster spot

After putting quarterback Cam Newton on injured reserve, the Panthers once again had an opening on their roster. Today, the team filled that spot by bringing back defensive end Wes Horton, who had spent some time with the Saints this year.

Horton first joined Carolina in the 2013 season. He’s played 77 career NFL games (all with the Panthers), totaling 15.5 sacks and 23 QB hits.

There’s an argument to be made for signing another quarterback like Taylor Heinicke to add depth behind Kyle Allen, but adding Horton reinforces one of the team’s best strengths and that’s usually a good thing. He also knows the system and should improve the team’s flailing run defense.
