Panthers announce Kyle Allen will start in Week 4 vs. Texans

The Kyle Allen show will continue for at least one more week. The Carolina Panthers announced that they have ruled out Cam Newton for Sunday’s road game against the Houston Texans.

Coach Ron Rivera said Newton needs more time to recover and there’s no exact timetable for his return, per the team website.

“What Cam needs right now is time and rest for his foot. We want him at 100 percent when he’s ready, so there’s no exact timetable for his return. … At this point, we’re going to go forward with Kyle as our starter,” Rivera said.

This will be the seventh game Newton has missed in his nine-year NFL career.

Allen played at a high level in the 38-20 win over Arizona and is now 2-0 as a starter going back to last season. However, Houston’s defense is likely to present a greater challenge than the Cardinals. Through three weeks, the Texans are allowing just 20.7 points per game.
