Panthers announce Cam Newton will throw at minicamp next week

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will be throwing at next week’s mandatory minicamp, according to an announcement by the team.

This development should not be a shock to those fans who have been following closely. Newton was recently reported to be throwing overhand again by the Charlotte Observer and has been hinting at an imminent return on social media.

Newton underwent shoulder surgery early this offseason to correct the issue that hampered the second half of his 2018 season and ended it early.

Before his shoulder went south again, Newton was playing at a very high level and on pace to approach some of his 2015 MVP production.

The Panthers have to hope Newton can play a full season as he represents their best chance to make the playoffs again. However, the team does have more backfiled depth this time around.

Carolina picked up West Virgina quarterback Will Grier in the third round of the draft. He will compete for the QB2 spot with Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke.

Update:

Jourdan Rodrigue reports Newton will be on a pitch count and only throw at stationary targets.

Nevertheless, this is still a big step forward.
