Panthers 1 of 7 NFL teams with ‘significant interest’ in Washington CB prospect

Some college football programs excel at producing NFL prospects at certain positions. For example, Washington has become a popular hub for cornerbacks in recent years. The school held its annual Pro Day on Monday and the Carolina Panthers were one of several teams that had people on hand.

According to Rob Rang at footballmaven, Carolina is one of seven teams that have expressed significant interest in Washington’s promising cornerback Byron Murphy.

“Along with the Panthers, the Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Saints, Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have all expressed significant interest in Murphy. . .”

On Monday, Murphy (5-foot-11, 189 pounds) had a 4.15 second short shuttle time and 6.83 seconds in the 3-cone drill. At the scouting combine, he had a 4.55 second 40-yard dash time, a 36.5-inch vertical and a 120-inch broad jump.

Let’s go to the tape.

Murphy vs. Ohio State

Murphy vs. Cal

Murphy vs. Utah

One downside for Murphy is a lack of experience: he played just 20 games in college. However, he did manage to post six interceptions, 20 pass breakups and seven tackles for a loss in that time.

If the Panthers really want him, they will likely have to use their first-round pick.
