Panipat couple dies by suicide after alleged harassment by ‘reel-obsessed’ daughter-in-law

A Panipat-based couple allegedly ended their lives after months of harassment and intimidation by their “reel-obsessed” daughter-in-law and her family, police said on Sunday, reports TOI. Rajesh (46) and Suman (44) were found unconscious at their residence in Nara village on May 9 and were shifted to a hospital in Rohtak, where they later died.

Police have registered a case against four individuals, including the couple’s daughter-in-law Sneha, her sister, and her parents, on charges of abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code. All accused persons are currently absconding, according to officials.

Domestic dispute linked to lifestyle differences

Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident stemmed from a love marriage that reportedly deteriorated due to cultural and lifestyle differences. The couple, who lived in a traditional village setting, had frequent disagreements with Sneha over her dressing choices and her regular filming of social media reels.

Allegations of sustained harassment

Family members of the deceased alleged that these domestic disputes escalated into prolonged harassment and a pattern of bullying. They claimed that prior to their deaths, Rajesh and Suman had described repeated conflicts and alleged that Sneha’s family had assaulted them, leading to severe mental distress.

Complaint filed by victim’s family

Following the deaths, Rajesh’s brother lodged a complaint at Matloda police station. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and initiated further investigation into the allegations.
