Panic as puppy trapped in reclining sofa is rescued by firefighters

Firefighters were called to rescue a puppy after she was trapped in a reclining sofa for almost an hour.

Joy, a 10-week-old Shih Tzu, crawled underneath the recliner and quickly became trapped when the chair was used.

Fire crews were called to the St Helens household in Yarn Close after the poor pup was trapped for 45 minutes.

Crews from St Helens Commuity Fire Station were soon on the scene but found it difficult to get the pup out.

Watch Manager Keith Williams, who attended the incident, said: "Joy’s long hair was very tightly entangled in the long screw part of the mechanism.

"It was a slow process as every time we unscrewed something or made a cut in the metal, the puppy yelped loudly, making it very stressful for everyone.”

After multiple failed attempts to release the petrified pup, crews eventually saved Joy from beneath the sofa, but the mechanism was still attached.

Joy was then taken to a vet for treatment.

Williams added: "The vet sedated her and managed to shave around the attached mechanism to remove it. He then carried out two x-rays to check everything was ok.

"It all ended well with Joy getting the all clear – apart from a bruise and a new bald patch. Joy’s owners were really grateful for our help – we’re glad to hear she’s happy and recovering at home.”
