Thai villagers along the Salween River in Sob Moei district fled their homes on Monday after a bomb dropped by the Myanmar air force landed inside Thai territory during air strikes against ethnic Karen forces.
It happened about 10.45 am, when the Myanmar air force attacked Karen National Union (KNU) positions in Kayin State, about 500 metres from the border and opposite Ban Mae Sarm Lab in Sob Moei district.
According to security officials, Myanmar used Yak‑130 and MiG‑29 fighter jets to bomb a KNU hospital and two nearby residential areas in Kayin State.
Sob Moei's district chief said villagers counted up to nine explosions, with one bomb overshooting and landing on the Thai side of the border, leaving a large crater on the Salween River bank near Ban Mae Waen.
No injuries or property damage were reported on the Thai side.
The explosion caused panic in the village. Residents fled the area amid fears of further strikes.
Thai soldiers and officials moved quickly to evacuate dozens of Thai villagers from Ban Mae Sarm Lab to a shelter about seven kilometres from the border.
