Panic as ferry crashes into famous dock at San Francisco harbour

A ferry carrying 53 passengers crashed into a dock in San Francisco sparking panic among passengers.

Footage shows the large blue and white vessel coasting out of control and into the docks at the Ferry Building in California.

Onlookers appeared panicked with some running away as it appeared the boat, incoming from Larksput, was about to collide with a walkway.

A spokeswoman for Golden Gate Ferry told the Marin Independent Journal the ferry was damaged in Friday's crash.

The incident was witnessed by crowds gathered by the water in San Francisco (REUTERS)

Priya Clemens added that the cause of the accident is under investigation and employees onboard are being questioned.

Eyewitness Tiffany Dennis said the accident set off panic among a crowd gathered at the attraction.

According to local reports, people on board were "yelling" as the incident unfolded.

She said it bumped into one dock then careered into another.

The vessel came to a stop when it struck concrete, shortly after 2.30pm.

A passenger and a worker onboard sustaining minor injuries, according to the Marin Independent Journal report.

According to ABC, there were holes in the hull of the boat and it will need to be towed back to where it came from.
