The government's subcommittee on novel coronavirus measures discussed ways to deal with a nationwide surge in cases and infection clusters at a meeting on Thursday.
The committee was expected to discuss whether the government would continue measures restricting audience numbers at large-scale events.
"We would like to ask the public to take thorough measures to prevent an explosive spread of infections," said Yasutoshi Nishimura, the minister in charge of economic revitalization and measures against COVID-19, at the start of the meeting.
Detecting infections at an early stage to contain the pandemic, strengthening support for foreign residents and measures to be implemented in cold regions were also on the agenda.
