Pandora's Box

There is a lot of children's theatre in Edinburgh which is really very silly and playing to the lowest common denominator, but this well thought out show - inspired by famous myths such as Icarus and his father Daedelus, Theseus and Ariadne, Odysseus and his sack of wind - is both sophisticated and inventive. It doesn't patronise its young audience, even if the adult actors sometimes display some of those irritating mannerisms that occur when grown-ups try to play kids.

You not only get more set for your money than in most Edinburgh shows (including the adult ones) you also see it used with enormous flair. Towels become an albatross, the lifeguard's white flags are transformed into Icarus' wings and a chair becomes a boat. Initially the broken up, collage style narrative seems a little complicated but as soon as the cast get down to the storytelling the show finds its own shape and rhythm.

In the end the piece develops not just a strong message - that if you do something you must live with the consequences - but also a certain poetic power in suggesting that whatever you unleash through your actions there is always hope, however feather-light.
