Pandemic 'might allow us to understand more about the planet’s seas than ever before'

The coronavirus pandemic might allow oceanographers to understand more about the planet’s seas than ever before, says Kathy Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space and also the first woman to reach the deepest known spot in the ocean.

Sullivan was talking to the Evening Standard’s Women Tech Charge podcast about visiting the Challenger Deep, a seabed recess about 11km below the surface of the Pacific, this summer.

“The ocean is quieter now than it has been in quite a while because of the reduction in shipping volume,” she told host Anne-Marie Imafidon.

“So we could get some recordings to pass to the deep sea oceanographers.”

The podcast’s third season is available now as the Standard launches its new Future London STEM Project.
